Using a Protective Bandage (Saniderm):

  • Wear it for at least 3-5 days - it protects the tattoo during the healing process (from pet hair, debris, water, etc), letting you go about your daily life.
  • When removing the Saniderm, do so in a clean environment (like a shower or sanitized sink). Pull it from a corner similar to removing a command strip - this helps avoid unnecessary pain and pulling at your fresh tattoo. Use only lukewarm water if you're removing it under running water.

Using a Regular Bandage:
  • If you're not using Saniderm, remove the initial bandage after 2-3 hours in a clean environment (like a shower or sanitized sink). You can leave it on overnight if it feels secure.
  • Use clean bedding to prevent the tattoo from sticking or staining your sheets.

Washing a Fresh Tattoo:
  • ONLY use clean hands to wash your tattoo - NO wash cloths, bath towels or anything abrasive to the skin.
  • Once you've taken the steps to remove the bandage, create a lather in your hands with a mild fragrance-free soap (we recommend plain Dial liquid soap). Gently wash the tattoo in circular motion until all ointment, blood and lymphatic fluid are gone. Rinse, then wash once more to ensure the skin is clean. Once a day in the shower is generally enough.
  • Pat (don't rub) the tattoo dry with a clean paper towel and let it air dry.

Applying Ointment, Lotion or Balm:
  • Once dry, apply a thin layer (do not over saturate) of the moisturizer of your choice. We strongly recommend Aquaphor for the first 2-3 days and then switching to a fragrance-free lotion such as Lubriderm. Some balms specifically designed for tattoos can be double checked by your artist if you are unsure.

Normal Healing Reactions:
  • Fresh tattoos may "weep" during the first few days (a mix of ink and plasma). Gently blot this away with a clean paper towel. Do not be alarmed if some ink transfers onto the paper towel.

Clothing and Activity:
  • Wear loose, breathable clothing over the tattoo to avoid rubbing or irritation.
  • Re-bandaging is not usually necessary unless recommended by your artist or if clothing rubs against the tattoo.
  • Avoid any strenuous activity for about 10 days to prevent extra stress on the fresh tattoo.

Scabbing and Peeling:
  • A few days in, you may see flakey skin/scabs that will fall off on their own. DO NOT pick or scratch them - this will cause the tattoo to heal poorly altering the design. Keep the tattoo moisturized and let the skin/scabs come off naturally.
  • Healing typically takes 2-4 weeks, but everyone's experience may differ.
